Kuplassa / Hospital bubble

Taudinkuvaan kuuluu vaahtoava virtsa.

There is a very slight tendency for the disease to happen more than once in a family, but it is slight and not worth any worry. If there is one child with the disease in a family; the chances of having a second child with the disease in the same family are only slightly higher than the uncommon chance of having one child with it. The incidence of the disease appears to be about one child in 100,000. Males have the disease twice as often as females.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The wakeup call at the hospital is an efficient tap on the light switch and a positive shout "Blood test!" She gets a sticker after a test and she has quite a pile already. We have a sticker book for them that her big brother eyes up with admiration and awe.

She is still swollen, the weight has not gone down.

Hospital breakfast is no treat for the taste senses, consisting of a rubbery egg and tough white bread that had seen the oven probably in the ice age. I get us breakfast from the cafeteria. The morning is quite foggy without espresso.

The drip continues to drip every four hours. The diuretics are working and she visits the toilet more often now. The poor girl is confused and eager to please, is she supposed to not pee or pee more? I try to explain to her the basics of the illness, but if I have trouble understanding it, how can she? I tell her that all her fluids i.e pee is kept inside her and it should come out, but with the pee, some good stuff is coming out too that should stay in. That the medicin is trying to fix it, so the pee will come out  but the good stuff will stay in.

The pee is frothy with the protein. Doctor´s say the amount of protein has gone down but it could be due to fact that she in peeing more in terms of quantity.

Nothing new from the doctors, just the same reassuring wide smile that is driving me up the wall. They did add antibiotics "just to be sure". Music to my ears, antibiotics to be sure. Cannot argue with them.

The day passes in the hospital bubble. She is being weighed, she gets her meds, we eat and drink,  play and watch videos. It kinda is nice at some times, spending one on one time with her, even if in the hospital. I love her so much I think my heart will burst out.

She lets her dad stay tonight. I need my sleep or I am of  no use to anyone. The screaming baby in the next room won´t bother her dad, me on the other hand, it nearly drove to madness. I cannot bear sick babies crying with no-one holding them, it breaks my heart into a thousand pieces.

Her dad is feeling sad because she wants her mum all the time, but I reassure him that all sick children want their mothers.

All in all, she is in such good spirits and does not complain. I on the other hand have a huge list of complaints...I should really be sleeping at home, but I finally get on-line and read untill the morning hours. Here´s a happy thought: There is a very slight tendency for the disease to happen more than once in a family, but it is slight and not worth any worry. If there is one child with the disease in a family; the chances of having a second child with the disease in the same family are only slightly higher than the uncommon chance of having one child with it. Sairaalassa / At the hospital

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Wednesday morning I was getting childcare and work shifts organized and crying to friends over the phone. Luckily a friend rushed over to give me a ride to the hospital and she promised to look after my youngest son untill my mother-in-law came to look after the boys.

I burst into tears when I heard news from the hospital. She was really swollen up and had a high fever.

She looked so small and vulnerable in the hospital bed inspite the fact that she had ballooned up. Her cheeks were red with the fever. Her weight was 25.9 kilos when her normal weight is around 21 kilos. The swelling was mostly on her face, stomach, bottom and thighs.

The doctors were pretty sure that it was Nephrotic sydrome. The urine test had protein in it and a little blood. I had googled "child swollen" and came to the same conclusion last night and was feeling very afraid. It did not sound like a good disease to have, if there are infact any good diseases out there. But no, it was not allergies, that we knew and saw. She had always been so so healthy. Where the hell did this come from?

She was taken to ultrasound to rule out any other causes for her symptons. I was worried they would find a tumor or something else that would need to be operated on, but luckily no. The doctor said she had swelling around her internal organs.

Then off to X-ray. I cannot even begin to understand how my little daughter was so brave. She did not complain once, did not cry. She was being poked and prodded and she took it all with no fuss whatsoever, swollen body and fever and all. And how tired she must have been, she did not get to go to bed untill 1am in the morning, so she had had very little sleep.

Back at the ward she was given a numbing patch on her hand for the drip to go in. She was given Albumin intravenously, the protein her kidney was leaking.  She also had Prednisol to treat the disease, a diuretic to help the swelling and Losec to help the stomachpains from the strong drugs. All this every four hours.

The doctors had consulted a nefrologist and they were treating this as Nefrotic syndrome untill they knew better.

The nurses monitored the amount of urin and the amounts of liquid she was drinking. She was to drink no more than 1,2 litres a day.

It was near impossible to get any sort of answers from the doctors. She has her birthday party this weekend, should we cancel? Well...yes...maybe you should. Ok. Well she is meant to travel to Germany next Thursday, can she go? Erm.....well...maybe not a good idea.

Dad left to look after the boys and get some sleep. I stayed the night. She didn´t want to wear hospital clothes since "they look really ugly." She will miss her preschool ending party. We are all in a state of shock. The phone keeps bleeping with messages.

She is fast asleep at 8pm. I am awake, answering messages. I have a mattress on the floor and wake up every three hours when the nurses come in to measure her blood pressure and give her the 30 minute drip. The machines beep the whole time. No one invented a silent mode on them for night use.
Luckily she sleeps through the night.

Ensimmäiset oireet / The first symptons

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

On friday the 25th, L was complaining that her eyes were swollen. The girl never complains about anything, so I took it seriously, since I could see for myself that they were puffy. L has no allergies except for getting a rash from a xmas tree. It had been a very tough spring for allergy sufferers, so I though that must be it, she had been sensitized. She was going to the summer cabin for the weekend, so we went and got her an allergy medication over the counter. It was the only logical explanation for the swollen eyes?

Sunday 27th and her eyes were still puffy and her cheeks were swollen too. The allergy medication wasn´t working. L´s father had googled and called a healt info number, and he was quite worried. They had said swelling of any kind should be taken seriously. We took her to an ER, but since it was Sunday, there was a 4 hour queue and they said they wouldn´t be doing any tests. So we went home, agreeing I would take her to the private doctor on Monday.

Monday came, she looked ok to me or had I just gotten used to her puffiness? It was a busy day and I was ill, so we stayed at home.

Tuesday 29th we both went to the doctor´s. I had laryngitis. She was taken to an inflammation test and tested for tonsillitis. The doctor said he had good news, the inflammation account was high, so it was not an allergy, it was a virus and the body reacted to the virus with allergy type symptoms. We were to take the same allergy medication and all would be good.

The kids spent the afternoon with their nanny in the park. When they came back, their father noticed L`s stomach had also swollen. Her thighs were twice the normal size. He took her straight back to the doctor´s, obviously a different one this time. He sent me a text to say they had been sent to the hospital for further tests. I was waiting anxiously for some answers, worried about her and how tired she must be. Finally after midnight I was told she had to stay the night. Bloody hell.
